About Burt
Burt Thakur is an Indian-American engineer, U.S. Navy veteran, and public figure known for his dedication to service and personal growth. Born in New Delhi, India, he was raised by his grandparents before moving to the U.S. in the late 1980s. After attending Valley Forge Military Academy, he served as a nuclear reactor operator in the U.S. Navy for six years. Following his military service, he built a successful career in the energy and engineering sector, managing power plants and overseeing critical infrastructure projects. In 2020, he gained national recognition on Jeopardy! after sharing how he learned English by watching the show with his grandfather. His story of perseverance and commitment to education, national security, and technological advancement continues to inspire many.
For military
Burt enlisted in the United States Navy a month after his 17th birthday. He served honorably during 9/11. During his service he renounced his Indian citizenship and became an American citizen. He became a nuclear reactor operator and served aboard the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and was deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Burt was part of a mission as a translator with special forces, where they boarded a ship, initially looking for explosives and terrorists – but ended up saving lives of sick fishermen in the Persian Gulf.
Burt is a champion for veterans and their access to care, and has helped many veterans get access to their benefits.
In Frisco, Burt wants to ensure that a space is granted for veterans organizations like the VFW and American Legion to share. As his best friend from the military committed suicide, Burt knows first hand the value that a community and shared space can provide to his brothers and sisters who served.
